Brewster For The Holidays Kicks Off With Snowman Search

BREWSTER – We now know who the 20 coolest folks in Brewster are. We just don’t know where to find them.
Brewster for the Holidays is officially underway as of Monday, but the main events don’t kick off until this weekend.
What’s new is the Great Snowman Search (no snow is needed). Twenty snowmen are lurking around town or in various local businesses; seems they want to stay out of the cold. Even a snowman needs to keep warm.
Three are outside of Brewster in Agway’s Orleans, Dennis and Chatham locations. Each business has a passport and if you can locate 15 snowmen and check them off on the passport, that’s worth an invitation to the Family Party at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Passport holders are also entered into the grand prize drawing for a new bike and helmet donated by Rail Trail Bike and Kayak. The snowman search is sponsored by Leighton Team Keller Williams Realty.
The Snowman Search officially begins Friday Nov. 24 and ends Dec. 2.
Many of the holiday celebration times and dates were still being finalized and updated on the chamber of commerce website as The Chronicle went to press.
“I think it’s important to understand the whole idea is for people to have fun,” Brewster Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kyle Hinkle said. “It’s for the young and young at heart. Most everything is free.”
Brewster for the Holidays will run through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 with something for everyone.
One of the signature features of Brewster for the Holidays is the Christmas ornament sale. Every year a new Brewster oriented ornament and artist is featured.
“We started with landmarks and have gone through nature scenes and favorite places,” Hinkle recalled. “We try to go four or five years with one type and now we’re doing seashells. We started that a couple of years ago and this year it is Sunshine Singleton’s (a Brewster artist) vision of a seashell.”
The seashell is a scallop illustrated with a colorful sun shining down on the Brewster flats. The ornaments are all signed and numbered and available at multiple businesses. Proceeds benefit the Emerald Hollow Therapeutic Riding Center.
“There are people in town who have a complete set,” Hinkle noted. After all these years that’s enough to decorate a Christmas tree in all Brewster images. Brewster For the Holidays began in 2007, replacing the Sea Captain’s Christmas which the town celebrated in the 1980s.
Other highlights include the annual Brewster Town Band Christmas Concert on Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Brewster Baptist Church. That’s free. Breakfast with Mr. And Mrs. Santa Claus Dec. 3 is sold out.
Friday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. it’s time to light the town Christmas tree and the windmill at Drummer Boy Park. That’s preceded by Rockin’ Round the Christmas Tree starting at 1 p.m. The Brewster Eddy School Choir will also be there and Santa will arrive by fire truck. Santa will also be at the Brewster Dog Park for photos with pets on Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The photos (with Santa Paws) will be professionally shot by Sue Unleashed Photography, and come with raffle prizes, goodies from Agway and the Polka Dog Bakery. The event costs $25 and benefits the dog park.
There really are too many events to mention; not all dates and times are final, but also on tap are book signings at the Brewster Book Store (including shark expert Greg Skomal on Dec. 2); “Sing Out! It’s the Season” at the Cape Rep Theatre; the Holiday Fair at First Parish Brewster Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; their first Holiday Pageant Dec. 17 at 10 a.m.; a carol sing at the Brewster Store Dec. 8, at 6 p.m., Santa at the Ocean Edge Mansion Dec. 9 and 15; the Sand Bar Quartet and Brewster Skippers at Lemon Tree Village Dec. 2; and a wreath and swag sale by the Brewster Garden Club.
