by Staff Reports

High tides and heavy winds battered the area Thursday morning, flooding roads and stranding motorists in Chatham. The National Weather Service report wind gusts of 73 mph in Wellfleet, while winds in Chatham were clocked at 56 mph. The gusts downed a few trees and many limbs, occasionally blocking roads around the Lower Cape.

Waves broke across Route 28 in South Orleans, closing the state highway. Chatham's high water rescue vehicle was needed to rescue motorists stranded on Morris Island. Around 300 customers were reported to be without power by Eversource at the peak of the storm.
