Oswell’s Bench

On a recent sunny Saturday, members of the Guild of Harwich Artists gathered in Doane Park in Harwich Port to celebrate Vivien Oswell (age 100), a co-founding member of the Guild. The impetus for the gathering was the recent installation of a park bench that commemorates the founding of the Guild by local artists who started selling their art in Doane Park in the mid 1970s. The Guild’s Monday Art-in-the-Park events in the summer continue to this day. Funds to purchase the oak bench were raised in a silent auction of Vivien’s art in the park last September. The artist is shown here on her bench with a print of her iconic oil painting of Saquatucket Harbor raised behind her. COURTESY PHOTO
