Athlete Of The Week: Olivia Avellar
ORLEANS – It was clear that Nauset senior Olivia Avellar wanted her final game at Charles Moore Arena to be special. In the end, the goaltender from Orleans proved to be perfect.
Avellar made 34 saves, including 15 in the third period, to secure a shutout and help propel fourth-seeded Nauset-Monomoy to a 4-0 victory over 13th-seeded Sandwich in a Division 2 second-round matchup. The win sends the Warriors to the quarter finals for the first time in program history.
“Typical Olivia,” Nauset-Monomoy coach Zach Wells said. “I don’t think she wanted to give up a single goal today.”
Avellar said she knew she had to be on top of her game after the team earned a pair of one-goal victories over Sandwich during the regular season.
“We’ve had two close games against Sandwich so I knew coming in, as we all did, that it was going to be a close game,” Avellar said. “I just wanted to help the team out the best I can, and the only thing I can do at the end of the day is keep the puck out of the net and give us the best chance to win.”
