Cape Rep’s Young Company Returns To The Stage

BREWSTER – Over the last nine years, the Cape Rep Theatre has been supporting young actors with the Young Company (YoCo), a free program for students in grades eight through 12 eager to learn all about theater through intensive rehearsals and productions.
For its spring show, YoCo will be performing “This Restless House: Agamemnon’s Return” by Zinnie Harris.
The story is a contemporary reimagining of the classic Greek tragedy “The Oresteia” by Aeschylus. Taking place in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the play centers on one family through the lens of the women, exploring themes of justice, betrayal and the intergenerational trauma caused by war. A spotlight is placed on the victims of war, often those who’ve never set foot on the battlefield.
The YoCo program looks for teens across Cape Cod who have a passion for acting and theater, focusing on the skillset of stage performances. Cape Rep officials encourage all who are interested to join.
Maura Hanlon is the associate artistic director for Cape Rep Theatre and YoCo program director, and plays a crucial role in the development of the program. She has a well-rounded resume when it comes to the industry, with directing, writing and acting credits along with numerous teaching and coaching roles. She is directing the upcoming YoCo performance.
The group has successfully put on numerous shows including “Macbeth,” “Great Expectations,” “The Odyssey,” “Once In A Lifetime,” and “Waiting For Ham.” One year, the program commissioned local playwrights to contribute short plays, crafting a collection which the group performed.
Most recently, a dual performance of dramas “Dead End” and “Waiting For Lefty” were deemed a roaring success.
According to the show announcement, YoCo features a talented group of students from across the Cape supported by Cape Rep Company artists including Hanlon, associate director Ian Hamilton, Alison Weller (voice and speech coach), Art Devine (stage combat), Jazzy MacDonald (stage management), Holly Erin McCarthy (costume design) and Janine Perry (Producing Artistic Director).
Tickets are available for three separate shows beginning Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 will showcase two performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $5 for students, with proceeds benefiting the program. Visit caperep.org or call the box office at 508-896-1888 to purchase tickets in advance.
