Jane Patricia Tracy Greene

November 22, 2023

On the afternoon of November 12, our world lost a treasured soul. Jane Patricia Tracy Greene, 77, passed unexpectedly in South Orleans, MA. She was born in Rockville Center, NY to the late Margery Mullen Tracy and Philip Monroe Tracy, attended MaryMount High School in Arlington, VA, and graduated from Ursaline College in Louisville, KY.

She met her husband, Kenneth A. Greene, on the parade field at Fort Myers in Arlington, VA. They wed November 30, 1969, and lovingly raised their family in South Orleans. A resident for 54 years, she was an active member of the Orleans community. She loved her town, and often prayed her rosary at Rock Harbor, Skaket Beach or her favorite - Paw Wah Point, where she loved to watch her swans.

Jane taught preschool at The Curiosity Shop in Orleans before co-founding The Learning Garden in East Orleans. While remaining involved in the school, Jane earned her real estate license and eventually attended evening nursing school at Cape Cod Community College to fulfill her dream of becoming an RN. She was a passionate advocate for her patients at MediCenter 5, Crossroads Medical, and Outer Cape Health Associates in Harwich and cared deeply for her coworkers.

Jane was a devout Catholic and parishioner at Our Lady of the Cape in Brewster, where she was honored to receive the Marian Medal for dedicated service. Jane taught religious education for 50 years, sharing her faith with generations of children. She was active in many ministries, including La Salette Laity, the Ladies’ Guild, Prayer Shawl Ministry and ECHO of Cape Cod, among others.

Jane was infinitely selfless, constantly prioritizing the needs of others before her own. Her presence lifted the spirits of those around her, and her light touched everyone she encountered. No matter where she went, she was met with hugs and conversation whether from a former student, customer or patient. Countless dear friends adored her, several of whom she was fortunate to have shared a day of laughter and reminiscing, complete with a stunning sunset over Cape Cod Bay, just days prior to her passing. She was grateful for all of her friends’ love, support, and laughter throughout the years.

The greatest joy in her life was the integral role she played in the lives of her grandchildren. She treasured her time with them and frequently stopped by, asking, “Who’s got kisses for Nana?”, which was always followed by the sound of footsteps running to the door. On “Nana Days” she could be found pushing a stroller through Harwich Center either to share lunch at the Stewed Tomato or attend play group at Brooks Library. She could later be found, rain or shine, sitting on the sidelines of every soccer game, baseball game, and horse show. One of her happiest moments was attending her granddaughter’s wedding, where she danced the night away, just one week before her passing. She reminded Elizabeth, Mary, Grace, and Joey daily that they were the light of her life. They hope she knew she was the light of theirs.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth A. Greene of Orleans, her son Jonathan (Sarah) Greene of Brewster, her daughter Tracy (Steve) Ventura of Harwich, her grandchildren: Elizabeth (Mathias) Ventura Boyar of Allston, Mary Catherine, Grace and Joey Ventura of Harwich, Emily Avellar of New Bedford, and Zachery Avellar of Springfield. She is also survived by her loving sister Susan T. May of Washington, D.C. and brother Philip Tracy of Navarre, FL, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday, November 24 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 678 Main St. in Harwich Center. A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, November 25 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Cape Parish in Brewster. Family and friends are invited to join in a celebratory reception following.
