William ‘Fred’ Gilmartin

William “Fred” Gilmartin, Jr. of Chatham, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2024 after a brief illness surrounded by his family. He was 76.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Ramona; his son Michael and partner Stacy and granddaughter Devon, his granddaughter Giuliana and Mackenzie and their mother Allison; his sisters Eileen and Bonnie, several cousins, his special niece Mary, and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Kelly and his mother, father, and brother.

He graduated from Chatham High School in 1967. He served his country honorably as a Sargent in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1973. He also completed U.S. Army Ranger training during this time.

He worked most of his career in the building trades in Chatham and Florida prior to retiring in 2019. He loved traveling, boating, shell fishing and spending time with his grandchildren teaching them the ways of life in Chatham.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a loyal and trusted friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation for friends and family will be on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans from 3:00 - 6:30 PM. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Chatham on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com
