Gavin Rode Curran

March 13, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Gavin Rode Curran on February 15, 2024 in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. He was born in 1967 in Anchorage, Alaska. His parents, Mary Jane (Doherty) Curran and Tom Curran, Jr. had relocated from Massachusetts to Anchorage seeking adventure in the great state of Alaska. By the time Gavin was born, his Dad had been appointed DA of Anchorage. So, this spirit of adventure was part of Gavin’s heritage. He and his brothers Tom and Desmond and his sister Maeve were exposed to a world of skiing, snow machines, -50 degree temperatures, northern lights, characters/want-to-be characters and the wild and wooly spirit of adventure. Due to his Dad’s untimely death in 1974, the family relocated to Milton, MA and Cape Cod, where Gavin attended school in Harwich, Fessenden, and graduated from Milton Academy. When the family dog, Scooby, a black Lab gave birth to 13 puppies, Gavin and his sister Maeve performed as “mid-wife,” and that sealed his life-long love of dogs. He graduated from Colorado College in 1990 and became a celebrated “ski bum” in Vail and Aspen. When he returned to the East Coast, Gavin and his brother Desmond became partners in striped bass fishing and D&G painting. With a shared notorious sense of humor, their adventures made history on Cape Cod. Throughout his life, Gavin, like his brother Tom, was fascinated with the world of film and TV production. In 1999, Gavin moved to New York City where his natural talent and unwavering work ethic propelled him to success in IATSE Local 52. He pursued and succeeded at a career in the electric department rising to the level of best boy, rigging gaffer and gaffer on notable films. Gavin was also the Chief Operating Officer at Sustainable Studios, LLC, a successful sound stage in New Jersey.

In 2004, he married Laurie Turner, and in 2007 they had their son, Hutch. As a Dad, he enjoyed exploring the city with Hutch and loved watching his son grow up. Gavin is survived by his son, Hutch Curran of West Bridgewater, his wife Kendal McTeigue of Martha’s Vineyard, his mother Mary Jane Curran and her husband Donald Cameron of Orleans, his brothers Tom Curran of LA and Desmond Curran of Plymouth, his sister Maeve Curran of Las Vegas, his aunt Ellen Moriarty of Brewster, and his uncle Donald Curran of Wareham.

A visiting hour will be held at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, 98 Bedford Street, Bridgewater, MA on Friday, March 15 from 5:00-6:00 pm, followed by a brief funeral service at the funeral home. All are invited. A celebration of Gavin’s life will be held later in the spring. All will be welcome.

In lieu of flowers a donation in Gavin’s name may be made to Massachusetts Association for Mental Health at www.mamh.org
