Local Voters Endorse Biden, Trump In Presidential Primary

Local residents went along with voters in the rest of the state in the March 5 presidential primary, overwhelmingly endorsing the presumptive nominees of the two major parties.

President Joe Biden easily won the Democratic primary, while Republican voters endorsed former president Donald Trump while also casting a healthy number of votes for Nikki Haley.

Voter turnout was relatively high for a primary, in the upper 30 percent range in Chatham, Harwich, Orleans and Brewster.

In Chatham, Trump just squeaked by Haley with 571 votes to 563 for the former South Carolina governor. Ron DeSantis earned 14 votes and Chris Christie earned 9.

Chatham Democrats backed Biden with 850 votes. Dean Phillips received 26 votes. Forty-three voters choose “No Preference,” which many are using as a protest of the Biden Administration’s support for Israel. Thirty-five percent of the town’s 6,045 registered cast ballots.

Harwich Democrats cast 1,875 votes for Biden and 73 for Phillips, with 101 voting no preference. Trump won the Republican vote with 1,184 to Haley’s 822. Christie received 32 votes, DeSantis 7. Voter turnout in Harwich was 36 percent, with 4,252 of the town’s 11,701 registered voters participating.

Thirty-nine percent of Orleans voters participated in the primary. Trump won the Republican vote 546 to 399 for Haley, 23 for Christie and 7 for DeSantis. Biden topped the Democratic field with 1,061 votes, with 43 for Phillips and 53 no preference.

In Brewster, Biden won with 1,598 votes to 63 for Phillips and 95 voting for no preference. Trump received 774 votes to Haley’s 683. Christie earned 16 votes and DeSantis 7.

Thirty-nine percent of the town’s 8,721 voters participated in the primary.
