ORLEANS – The moment wasn’t too big for freshman Sam Mayhew.

With the clock ticking down and the score tied at 3, Nauset freshman Sam Mayhew stepped up to help the top-ranked Warriors boys hockey team earn another crucial win over the second-ranked Scituate Sailors.

Mayhew, a Brewster resident, netted the game-winning goal with 2:08 remaining after he redirected a shot by junior Logan Poulin for a power-play goal that lifted Nauset to a 4-3 victory over Scituate at Charles Moore Arena.

“It’s amazing,” Mayhew said of the goal. “It’s massive because Scituate is a good team. It was a great battle, a close game all the way.”

The goal capped off a three-point night for Mayhew, who added a first-period goal and an assist to help the Warriors take a 3-0 lead.

“Sam’s been doing a great job,” Nauset coach Connor Brickley said. “He’s really taken a jump the past handful of games and the coaching staff is recognizing that. He has a great nose for the net and a great offensive instinct, so he’s getting a bigger role and he continues to produce. I’m happy for him and he’s only making our team better.”

Poulin praised Mayhew for his hard work.

“The kid works harder than anyone I know,” the junior said. “He’s got great hand-eye coordination and he just got moved to the power play and is excelling at that. I think he’s an all-around player – he can hit, he can shoot – I can’t really say enough good about him.”
