Peter J. Hogan

November 04, 2026

Peter J. Hogan, 83, passed away peacefully at his home in South Chatham, MA on Thursday October 29th, 2026 surrounded by loving family.
Family and friends will remember him as a humble, hardworking, kind and respectful man whose love for others was evident in everything he did. He had a friendly nature, a wonderful sense of humor that could bring a smile to those around him. Calm, cool, and collected. He was a true listener, always putting the needs of others before his own. His motto throughout his life that he adopted from his grandfather, John J. Hogan, was “If you can’t do good for others then what’s the point in living.”
Born November 14,1942 to Dalton and Marie Hogan at Glens Falls Hospital, NY. He was the second oldest of five siblings. Peter grew up working on the Hogan Dairy Farm in Hudson Falls, NY. He met his beloved wife, Margaret “Margie” Leonard when they were just teenagers. They started their long and beautiful journey together, ultimately they were married in 1967.
Peter joined the Air Force in 1963 and worked as an airplane mechanic. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1966. He was a proud veteran. Peter then attended Le Moyne College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Premedicine leading to his career as a sales representative, ultimately finishing his career as Vice President of Lymtech Scientific.
In their younger years, Peter and Margie both worked full time executive jobs, raised five children, and followed their passion of renovating homes. A few of those included a farmhouse, lake house, and a former sailing camp on Cape Cod. They always found time to ski in the winter and boat in the summer, cherishing moments with family and close friends along the way.
After retiring, Peter and Margie focused on their rental properties on Cape Cod. Always wanting to stay busy, he took a position with the Chatham Shellfish Division as a shellfish warden which he adored. His friendly and kind demeanor was welcome to all. After that, he enjoyed volunteering at a local food rescue organization delivering compost to a local farm and he did this weekly until just months before he passed.
His favorite hobbies in his later years included listening to music, strumming his Washburn guitar, watching The Patriots play and Nascar races, walking in his neighborhood and on the shores of his favorite beaches on the Cape, watching the multiple species of birds visit his feeders, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Peter is survived by his children, Kathryn Hogan and her husband Slade, Tara Hart, Shamus Hogan and his wife Katie, and Peter Hogan Jr.; his grandchildren, Fergus and Maeve, Rees and Cathryn, and Jack; and his siblings, Carol Hogan James, Timothy J. Hogan and his wife Judy, John B. Hogan, sister-in-law, Peggy Hogan, and brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Cindy Leonard. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family of Hogans.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Leonard Hogan; his daughter, Shana Marie Hogan; his brother, D. Michael Hogan; his son-in-law, Pete Hart; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kelly James and Anne Hogan.
Nothing was more important to Peter than his family. He always made it a point to give each a hug and say I love you every single day. He was a man of few words but the words were always thoughtful and deliberate. His inherent goal was to make the world a better place and he felt reassured when he knew there was “more good than bad”. He was a true mentor to everyone who knew him with his kind and pensive nature and made this world a better place.
Peter’s family wishes to thank their hospice team and all of their associates for such professional and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Peter’s memory by practicing kindness and patience towards each other just as he would have done. His Irish eyes will always be smilin’ upon us.
