Janet Lynn (Romme) Hicks

October 21, 2026

Janet Lynn (Romme) Hicks, 75, passed away peacefully on August 19th, 2022 at her home in Brewster, MA, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  Her life started in Rutherford, NJ where she loved growing up with her parents George and Muriel Romme and her three siblings.  She made lifelong friends at Rutherford High School who also went on to attend Clara Maass Nursing School with her.  There she grew as a person and learned her profession as a Registered Nurse, at which she excelled for 33 years.
Early in her adult life, Janet was joined by her love and partner, Paul Hicks, who proposed while on leave from the Navy.  After marrying in 1970, they moved to California to start their life together.  There she continued to care for patients with passion and professionalism at Orange County Medical Center and then at Saint Anne’s Hospital when they moved to Westport, MA.  When she and Paul began planning a family, they moved to Cape Cod to be close to both of their families, and Janet joined the staff of Cape Cod Hospital where she worked until retiring in 2002.
When Janet wasn’t caring for people in the hospital she was with family.  Her family grew when her son, Andrew, was born in 1979, followed in the next few years by many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved so much.  Family gatherings, vacations, trips to Ashland, NH and holiday celebrations together with family meant so much to her.
Janet’s community involvement grew when she retired as she found other ways to care for people and organizations she felt deeply about.  Volunteering for years as an Intake and Assistance Coordinator at Lower Cape Outreach Council brought her great joy and let her keep helping people.  She also treasured the opportunity to help others through volunteering for the Brewster Historical Society, Cemetery Committee, Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, and so many more.  She also cherished the many relationships she developed during that time.
Janet predeceased her husband of 51 years, Paul, who loved her every day until his passing on September 26th, 2026.  Janet is survived by her son, Andrew Hicks; sister Diane (Stephen) Jones; and brothers Hal and Arthur (Diane) Romme.  She is also survived by a large network of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family whom she loved dearly and was very close with.  Janet will be deeply missed by all she touched and most of all by her family.
A memorial service to honor the lives of both Janet and Paul will be held on October 23rd, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at the Brewster Baptist Church, 1848 Main St, Brewster, MA 02631. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the Brewster Historical Society.
