For more than 75 years, Hart Farm in Dennis Port has been a destination for Cape Cod visitors and locals alike looking for everything from fresh produce and gardening supplies to seasonal flowers and holiday decorations. It is a one-stop shopping destination in the area thanks to husband and wife duo Don and Nancy Kossack.
“We’ve been working at it a long time, and we really put a lot of effort into it,” said Kossack. “We’re kind of an old-fashioned farm stand, garden center. We want to keep everything that people want — good quality and reasonable prices.”
The business on Upper County Road dates back to 1947, but it was in 1972 that Don Kossack and his parents purchased the property and began transforming it into the garden center and farm stand that customers know today.
What began as a small vegetable farm has grown into a complete garden center offering annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, vegetable plants, flowering plants and everything needed to maintain a lawn or garden. Hart Farm also continues to grow some of its own vegetables and operates a seasonal farm stand featuring local produce. A trip to Hart Farm is a destination experience and with their greenhouse, nursery and farmstand there is something for everyone.
Open from March through Christmas, Hart Farm changes with the seasons. Spring brings gardening supplies, fertilizers, mulch and colorful flowers, while summer offers a wide selection of plants and fresh produce. Currently this fall season the farm is filled with chrysanthemums, pumpkins, gourds and seasonal decorations. When the season shifts to Christmastime customers can find fresh-cut trees, poinsettias, Christmas cactus, cyclamen and festive greenery.
Kossack prides himself on running an “old-fashioned” operation at its core. He is proud to offer his customers a vast variety of goods at high quality and reasonable prices.
One of the Hart Farm’s holiday specialties is its handmade arrangements, created on-site by staff. Customers can choose from decorative outdoor arrangements, evergreen displays and indoor centerpieces. While many are available for immediate purchase, Hart Farm also accepts custom orders for special colors, matching arrangements and larger gatherings.
After more than five decades in the business, Kossack takes pride in the relationships Hart Farm has built with its customers, many of whom return year after year. Kossack believes that the farm’s knowledgeable staff and personal service have helped keep customers coming back.
“Some people come quite a distance to come to us,” he said, noting that customers travel from Plymouth to Provincetown. “People get to know us, and we’ve got a pretty good following. I like to say that we have the best customers in the world.”
