PLEASANT LAKE – Rahvarion Smith 2, Old Colony 1.
So it went for Cape Cod Tech boys soccer in a win against the Cougars last Thursday, as Smith scored once in each half to put the Crusaders over for their third win in a row.
Smith, a senior, first broke loose less than five minutes into regulation. He eluded a tangle of two pressing defenders, the escape providing an easy finish in front of Old Colony’s net.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Smith ran through again, this time patiently playing deeper toward the right post and sneaking a shot at a highly difficult angle to put the Crusaders ahead 2-0.
Cape Tech held on for a 2-1 win, with Smith’s offensive impact being the significant difference.
“We put in the intensity and the effort last half of the game, and thankfully our defense was playing really amazing today,” Smith said.
A captain since last year, Smith is a leading scorer for a 7-2-1 (as of The Chronicle’s Tuesday deadline) Cape Tech team ranked within the top 15 of Division 5 .
“He's a great soccer player,” head coach Brandon Chinchilla said. “He's been helping us through the season.”
Smith, at the striker position, serves as a constant scoring threat for the Crusaders. Nearly any pass to Cape Tech’s front line feels like an opportunity for Smith to win a ball and charge through on goal.
“I'm a go-at-you striker,” he said. “I'm going to go at you and run you down, and if I can run you down, I have players in midfield that can control the ball, switch it.”
