Orleans Man Sentenced For Sexual Assault Of A Minor
Richard Alberts
BARNSTABLE – An Orleans man was found guilty by a Barnstable Superior Court jury last week of sexually abusing a minor.
Richard Alberts, 76, was sentenced Sept. 22 on three charges of aggravated rape of a child and an additional charge of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, according to a press release from Cape and Islands District Attorney Rob Galibois’ office.
In July 2022, the victim reported she had been sexually assaulted to Orleans police. She told police that the assaults began in the summer of 2017, when she was preparing to enter sixth grade, and continued into her eighth grade year in 2021.
An investigation by Orleans police resulted in the four indictments against Alberts, who according to the release is more than 50 years older than the victim.
A jury sentenced Alberts to 12 to 14 years in a state prison on the rape convictions. He was also placed on three years probation on the assault and battery conviction.
Galibois in the release praised the “courage” it took the victim to come forward to police.
“Facing that process and allowing her voice to be heard before a jury is no small thing,” he said. “We recognize the victim’s courage, resilience, and determination.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
