Harwich Remembers 9/11 Attacks With Reverent Silence

 HARWICH – Close to 100 people turned out for the 25th anniversary 9/11 ceremony on Friday morning at the Robert A. Peterson Firehouse on Sisson Road.

 Over the years the annual event has drawn lengthy remembrances and reflections by public safety officials, usually led by Fire Chief David LeBlanc. But LeBlanc said on Friday the 25th anniversary would be acknowledged by silence.

The ceremony was brief. Police Department Chaplain Darren Morgan began the ceremony with the prayer. Fire Department Lieutenant Adam Laplante followed with a quote from Captain Doug Mitchell, of the New York Fire Department Ladder 38 company.

“September 11th, 2001, was not just another day,” Laplante said. “Let us ensure the legacy of those who perished becomes a reminder of the extraordinary spirit that exists within humanity and inspires us to live our lives with compassion, support each other in times of crisis, and carry forward their example of selfless service. Remembrance is more than just a ritual; it is a call to action. It reminds us to live with integrity, value our communities, and uphold the principles of service and sacrifice.”

 A bell was rung signaling moments of silence for fallen comrades who responded to their final call to duty on that day. Paul Mawn then played Taps. The crowd then came together to greet one another and share individual stories.
