Our View: Generosity -- Something We Can Agree On

It really doesn’t need to be said, but there’s an awful lot dividing us these days. Locally, maybe it’s the residential tax exemption or the affordable housing project down the road. Nationally, it’s, well, just about everything. It’s hardly safe to talk about the weather without getting into a debate about climate change.

 So when we come upon something we can all agree upon, it’s cause for celebration. Here’s a small list to consider: Being able to make left turns again. Enjoying the very best weather of the year in September. Bemoaning high gas prices. Grumbling about the early return of pumpkin spice coffee — and then enjoying it. 

 Here’s some more common ground to consider: when a neighbor needs help, we step up. And right now, there are a lot of neighbors for whom beautiful September days are for working multiple jobs, high gas prices are budget-busters, and even a pumpkin spice coffee is a luxury. These are the folks who rely on the Family Pantry of Cape Cod to help make ends meet.

 Each summer since 2017, we’ve turned to the Lower Cape’s residents, seasonal folks and visitors to contribute to our Summertime Helping Neighbors campaign to benefit the Family Pantry, and they’ve never let us down. People of all stripes, from all around the country and beyond, have pitched in to help us meet our fundraising goals. This year, we set a goal of $110,000 — the most ambitious goal in the history of the summertime campaign — and eclipsed it before the end of August. It was a breathtaking show of generosity, and we’re very grateful. As of this writing, the campaign had raised well over $120,000. Thanks to the Family Pantry’s purchasing power, that translates to nearly a half-million nutritious meals.

 And that’s something we can all get behind.
