Janet Mary (Eldridge) Brennan, 81, of Chatham, Massachusetts, and Venice, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. She leaves behind a lifetime of love, kindness, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family, friends, students, and community.
   Janet was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts, on January 24, 1945, to Rodney Eldridge and Edwiga (Spakowski) Eldridge. She grew up in Chatham, where she built lifelong friendships and developed the quiet strength and resilience that would define her life. After losing her mother at the age of 13, she was lovingly supported by her father, Rodney, her stepmother, Mary, and a cherished family friend, Marcella Daniels, whose love and guidance helped shape the remarkable woman she became.
Janet attended Chatham Public Schools, where she met the love of her life, William Joseph “Bill” Brennan. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State University before later earning her master’s degree from Framingham State University. Janet began her teaching career at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School before dedicating many years to teaching home economics at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, where she inspired generations of students with her patience, creativity, and encouragement.
To know Janet was to know someone who could create beauty out of almost anything. She possessed an extraordinary talent for stained glass, ceramics, knitting, sewing, basket weaving, and countless other crafts. If there was something to be made, Janet could teach herself how to make it, and then happily teach someone else. Her creativity was never about the finished project. It was about bringing people together, sharing what she loved, and making others feel capable.
Janet was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and generously volunteered her time for bake sales, church dinners, craft fairs, and countless community events. She believed that the best way to show love was through service, and she quietly gave of herself whenever someone needed a helping hand. She was kind, disciplined, humble, and an exceptional listener. She never spoke poorly of another person and always found the good in those around her. She made everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved.
She met the love of her life, William Joseph “Bill” Brennan, while they were in high school. Their love story began as teenagers and grew into a beautiful marriage that lasted 55 years. Together they built a life centered on family, faith, friendship, and creating a home where everyone belonged. Whether hosting Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas celebrations, Easter traditions, or the annual Fourth of July cookout after the Chatham parade, Janet’s home was more than a gathering place. It was a place where family and friends always felt welcomed, no matter the occasion. Her door was always open, the conversation was always warm, and everyone left feeling just a little more loved than when they arrived.
After Bill’s passing in 2021, Janet carried his memory with her every day. She often shared stories about him, smiled at the things he would have said, and found comfort in remembering the life they built together. Though she missed him deeply, she continued to surround herself with the people she loved, finding joy in family gatherings, visits with lifelong friends, traveling, and making new memories. She treasured time spent at her homes on Cape Cod and in Venice, Florida, traveled throughout the world, enjoyed reading, practicing yoga, creating beautiful works of art, and never missed an opportunity to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She even became an enthusiastic Patriots fan after Bill’s passing, faithfully watching every game and feeling close to him through the traditions they once shared.
Janet found happiness in life’s simple moments. She looked forward to Christmas music filling the house each holiday season, coloring Easter eggs with her family, baking Christmas cookies, enjoying an oatmeal cookie with a cup of coffee, watching The Young and the Restless, and hearing Anne Murray sing “Save the Last Dance for Me.” She insisted she always needed a light jacket, no matter the weather, and everyone who knew her smiled at her lifelong dislike of the color green. Whether she was hosting a holiday, sharing a home-cooked meal, or simply spending time with the people she loved, Janet had a remarkable way of making every moment feel special.
Above all else, Janet’s greatest accomplishment was the family she loved so fiercely. She celebrated every milestone, encouraged every dream, and found genuine joy in the accomplishments of those she loved. There was never a question of whether she cared. She made sure everyone around her knew they mattered.
Janet is survived by her loving children, Pamela Bowden (Joseph) and Peter Brennan (Jessica); her beloved grandchildren, Emma Bowden, Emily Brennan, Sarah Brennan, and Janet Brennan; and her brother, Jerry Eldridge (Sandy). She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Joseph Brennan, and her parents, Rodney Eldridge and Edwiga (Spakowski) Eldridge.
Those fortunate enough to know Janet will remember a woman whose greatest gift was making others feel at home. Her kindness asked for nothing in return, her creativity inspired everyone around her, and her love will continue to shape her family for generations to come.
They say the measure of a life is found not in the years we are given, but in the love we leave behind. Janet’s love can be found around every holiday table, in every handmade gift, in every birthday letter, and in every person she welcomed into her home. And whenever the waves meet the shore along Cape Cod and Venice Beach, those who loved her will hear echoes of her laughter, feel the warmth of her presence, and know she is never far away.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wed. 8/19 at 11 AM in Holy Trinity Church Rte. 28 W. Harwich. Burial will be held privately in South Chatham Cemetery.
