Bank Street Firehouse Tour Highlights Adaptive Reuse

HARWICH – The conversion of the Bank Street Fire Station into housing will serve as a centerpiece for the Boston Society of Architects’ guidebook for adaptive reuse of structures aimed at helping add housing on Cape Cod.
The recently released guidebook explores how existing buildings across Cape Cod can be converted into year-round housing while preserving the historic fabric, environmental resources and identity of a community.
“Adaptive reuse is one of the most practical and cost-efficient strategies for expanding affordable and attainable housing in rural tourism driven economies,” according to the society.
On Thursday evening, members of the society will join with Cape Cod Commission staff at the Bank Street Firehouse to showcase its adaptive reuse solution for addressing housing needs.
The old firehouse was renovated into apartments with a small fire museum on the ground floor. The event will include a tour of the project and grounds and highlight the best practices for navigating regulatory processes for similar projects on Cape Cod, with a brief presentation from the Cape Cod Commission.
The event at the firehouse, which is free and open to the public, begins at 5:30 p.m. and will run to 8 p.m.
