HARWICH – With summer arriving, cultural arts programs are starting to pop up in town. Music, movies, a farmers market and the seaside marketplace will be swinging open the doors of the Cultural Arts Municipal Building at 204 Sisson Rd. and other locations around town.
Director of Cultural Affairs Kara Mewhinney said the town’s farmers market will begin its season on Thursday, June 25, operating on the front lawn of the facility.
The market features “fresh, locally grown and sourced produce, handcrafted goods, unique gifts, and a whole variety of products from local vendors,” said Mewhinney. The farmers market will be open each Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. through Aug. 27.
Summer movie nights will be held on several Sunday nights starting at 8 p.m. The shows begin on June 28 with “The Sandlot,” and “Jaws” will be shown on July 5. On July 19, “Moana 2” will be shown, and on Aug. 2 “The Goonies” will screen. The movie season ends on Aug. 16 with “Zootopia.”
The Artisan Shacks at Saquatucket Harbor will open on Wednesday, July 1, featuring a variety of local artisans, handcrafted goods, artworks, jewelry, gifts, and more, said Mewhinney. The shacks will be open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the season.
If it’s music you are looking for, stop by the gazebo in Brooks Park on Monday nights. Concerts run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and feature a host of local talent.
Opening night is June 29 with J Place and The Rockers, a blues, soul and rock band. On July 6 it’s Just Like That, a dance party rock band. On July 13 The Most will perform American rock n’ roll. Digney Fignus offers Americana and other genres on July 20. On July 27 The Fred Clayton Band will be singing the blues. Aug. 3 features the Kingfish playing a high-energy blend of music. On Aug. 10 Pitchfork will provide sounds from the 1950s to today. On Aug. 17 the Front Street Jazz Ensemble will shake the gazebo. Hey Day will perform Americana folk on Aug. 24. Aug. 31 brings the Lynch Brothers to jam. The season comes to a close on Sept. 7 with the Jelly Jazz Quintet.
Mewhinney said support for a number of the programs is provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Council district investment grants.
