“Our whole staff is from Cape Cod. When a client calls us, nine times out of 10 they ask us if we are in fact based on the Cape,” Phil Boire, owner of Mr. Handyman of the Cape and Islands said. “We only partner with Cape Cod vendors, licensed electricians, licensed plumbers, supply houses. And all of the materials we purchase are from the Cape. We don’t go over the bridge for any of it. That is very important to us.”
Boire and the Handyman team are serious about working locally and serving local clients, and it shows. Located in Dennis, they walk the walk when it comes to keeping things local. And it is no small feat for the Mr. Handyman operation, since they have thousands of clients all over the Cape.
“These are our key ingredients,” Boire said. “We are a national franchise in our 30th year in operation here on the Cape. And we are in the top 10 percent of over 300 franchises in the country, which we are really proud of.”
Mr. Handyman of the Cape and Islands has roughly 7,000 residential customers and about 300 commercial clients. With a staff of 10 people including eight service professionals and one rapid response vehicle that can respond to urgent matters in four hours or less, Mr. Handyman can handle just about anything. They have two customer service representatives and a marketing manager who handle all of the inquiries on the phone, through email and social media.
“Carrie Adam has been with me for five years now,” Boire said. “She is the ‘first voice’ of  Mr. Handyman of the Cape and Islands, I like to say, as our customer service rep. And Hannah Howes is our head of marketing. She handles all of our ads and social media. We get a lot of inquiries on social.”
On the commercial side, the business has been rapidly growing over the years with clients in the banking industry, local malls, restaurants, realtors and office spaces. Mr. Handyman has proudly worked with the folks at the Cape Cod Mall, Mashpee Commons and doctors’ offices, realtors and attorneys’ offices up and down Cape Cod, “from the bridges to Ptown and both islands” Boire says.
“We just had one longtime client reach the $1 million spend threshold with us,” Boire proudly said. “We have been servicing this private school for over a decade and we have done all sorts of work inside and outside of their campus for them. Our commercial business is growing rapidly.”
For residential clients, Mr. Handyman of the Cape and Islands can do it all, including home repairs, safety and mobility services, carpentry, drywall, assembly, painting, flooring, window and door services and just about everything in between.
One area Boire has a special interest in is “aging in place” services.
“I am an aging in place specialist,” he said. “A lot of our clients are elderly, and I will go into their homes and assess areas for grab bars or tub to shower conversions. I go in and look for what they might need like ramps for wheelchairs or widening areas. They don’t want to go into nursing homes so we help retrofit their homes so they can stay where they are.”
Boire and the team at Mr. Handyman of the Cape and Islands believes that the process of hiring a handyman should be easy. They stand behind their trustworthy and reliable reputation. Be sure to check them out online and call them for your next project.
“I have a passion for this work and I love doing it,” Boire said. “I am a people person. I love looking at a home and coming up with ideas and collaborating with a homeowner. What are their needs? What do they want? How do they envision this? I have been doing this for over 40 years.  I make a plan, show them, we tweak it and boom! We make it happen!”
