HARWICH – Entering Monomoy boys lacrosse’s tilt against Bourne last Friday, sophomore Izaiah Freeman was coming off an injury, and the team wasn’t sure if he’d be able to take faceoffs.
Freeman, however, wanted to give it a go, and he did. Later that afternoon, after the Canalmen had gotten the 22-6 win over the Sharks, a Bourne player passing by on the way back to the bus specifically expressed props for Freeman to Monomoy head coach Chris Harlow.
Freeman recorded three goals and an assist (in addition to four goals, two assists the previous game) while stepping up to the center dot against some of the best faceoff opposition Monomoy had faced all year.
He and junior Nick Garneau have emerged as two key players — and leaders — for the Sharks.
Garneau, who also plays for Harlow on the boys hockey team, had never played offense before this season but wanted to try that side of the field. He’s in turn become one of Monomoy’s core offensive players. Even still, last week against Bourne, he started on defense to help fill in some absences the Sharks were working through.
“He's just an absolute vocal leader,” Harlow said. I mean, he's a guy that, when he's going, the rest of the team is going. He's definitely the most vocal guy on our team, and Izaiah is another vocal one.”
Garneau also earned a captaincy role during the season.
“Nick has just really brought it to both the locker room and the field,” Harlow said. “He's a voice of reason and someone that I can trust to keep a good pulse on the locker room as well.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
