BUZZARDS BAY – Ever since she was an eighth grader playing for the Cape Cod Furies co-op girls hockey team, Gaby Bassett has established a reputation as a playmaker.

Bassett added another moment to her long list of special memories when she helped the Nauset-Monomoy girls hockey team make history with a 1-0 victory over Sandwich.

The forward from Chatham scored the game’s only goal, a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the slot with 9:14 remaining, to help the Warriors earn the program’s first victory over the Blue Knights.

“Coming into the game, we really wanted to beat them, so this is huge,” Bassett said. “It felt really good to score and help the team.”

The game-winner helped continue a hot streak for Bassett, who entered the Sandwich game after scoring a combined eight goals in the team’s previous two games, according to coach Zach Wells.

She said she’s hopeful the Sandwich win will serve as a confidence boost for the entire team.

“It was huge for the team,” Bassett said. “Hopefully this will help us with our confidence.”
