HARWICH – Racers went over the herring run and through the woods Sunday during the first iteration of a five-kilometer event that raised money for scholarships and a local nonprofit.
The inaugural Harwich Herring Run — held by the Lower Cape Kiwanis Club and Monomoy Regional High School Key Club — took participants from the Cape Cod Rail Trail around West Reservoir, crossing the fish ladder that only a week prior was reopened for harvesting for the first time in two decades.
Cole Rauch, 18, finished first of 28 participants with a time of 20:59.6, followed by Jayden Smith, 18, with a time of 21:59.1.
The event raised funds for Lower Cape Kiwanis Club’s scholarship fund as well as Dream Day on Cape Cod, a nonprofit that offers a summer camp in Brewster for chronically ill children and their families.
