HARWICH – Monomoy freshman Liv Sanford hammered three softballs to deep left field in a premier display of power hitting during the Sharks’ 19-2 win against Falmouth on April 8.
Hitting out of the six-hole, Sanford was responsible for a significant share of Monomoy’s offensive explosion by way of a home run and two triples, good for eight runs batted in. For each of the three extra-base hits, Sanford pulled the ball with serious pop.
“I'm always in the cages, hitting, practicing all the time, so I've been working all year long for this,” she said. “So it just pays off.”
Sanford started on the team last season as an eighth grader. She played first base then and was moved to second base this year. She can play pretty much anywhere and has good energy, head coach Stacy Yarnall said.
“She's a great hitter, great ball player,” Yarnall said.
Sanford consistently came up to bat with runners on and made the most of it. Her first knock of the afternoon was a two-RBI triple in the midst of a huge inning for the Sharks. The following inning, Sanford launched another deep shot to left, so deep that she had enough time to scamper home in addition to the two other runners already on base driven in. An inning later, she once again dropped the barrel and lifted off for a bases-clearing triple.
“My teammates are great hitters obviously, so they're always on base for me, and they just give me chances to hit RBIs for them,” Sanford said.
All told, Sanford compiled 10 total bases, a monster individual performance punctuating the authoritative team win.
“She's young and she just is consistent, so it's always fun to have her,” Yarnall said.
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
