Janet Scott Eldredge

April 01, 2026

It is with great sadness that her family reports the passing of Janet Scott Eldredge, 95, of North Chatham on March 23rd, 2026.
Janet was born in Syracuse New York on February 24, 1931, to Richard and Janet Raymond. She was married to James C. Eldredge of South Chatham for 38 years. She leaves behind her daughter Julie Eldredge-Dykens (m. Jeffrey), her son Scott Eldredge (Jennifer) and her son Edson Eldredge (m. Maria). A son James, and a daughter Susan, predeceased her. Janet also leaves behind three grandchildren, Andrew Dykens, Abigail Dykens, and Joshua Dykens as well as two great grandchildren, Marion and Remy. Janet was predeceased by her sister Elisabeth (Betty) Raymond and brothers Richard (Bud) Raymond and Tom Raymond.
Upon the death of her father, the family moved to the family farm in West Bridgewater and after a time her mother purchased eleven acres in North Chatham where Janet lived joyfully overlooking Stillwater Pond and Ryder’s Cove for the rest of her life. Janet was a graduate of Chatham High School.
To say that Janet’s hands were full raising her five children is a massive understatement. In addition to caring and cooking for her family she frequently worked for her Aunt Laura Macdonald at the Rose Acres Inn. She assisted in caring for the Navy personnel when they occupied the Inn during WWII. She was a consummate cook and baker noted for her pies at Thanksgiving and Christmas made with handpicked blueberries. She was a masterful seamstress and knitter. Her grandchildren wear her handiwork to this day, and many of her friends and family possess her knitted afghans. She loved her garden, birds (catbirds who ate out of her hands), crossword puzzles, the Red Sox, numerous dogs, cats, ponies, horses, a parrot, and most recently her dog ‘Mookie Betts’.
In her day Janet was an active member of the Eastern Star chapter at the Chatham Masonic Lodge. Janet worshipped at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham until the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic. She assisted in its thrift shop for many years. During her last working years, Janet worked as a home health aide for the Council on Aging.
The family effusively thanks the management and staff at Liberty Commons and at Broad Reach Hospice for the remarkably kind attention and care shown to Janet in her last days. Words cannot possibly express the patience and thoughtfulness of the care that she received.
Janet was a loving, thoughtful and caring wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. She is, and will be, deeply missed.
There will be calling hours at the Nickerson Funeral Home on Friday 4/10/2026 from 4-7 p.m.
Burial will be private in South Chatham Cemetery on 4/11/2026.
Donations may be made in Janet’s memory to Broad Reach Hospice, 390 Orleans Rd. North Chatham, MA. 02650.
