Minding Your Business- Nickerson Disposal

by Melissa De La Vega

“This is truly a family owned and operated business. We care about the people that work for us,” said Ben R. Nickerson, the third generation co-owner of Nickerson Disposal. “Our employees stick around and we pay them well. It’s always nice for customers to see the same face coming around, you know? We offer consistent employment. You won’t see a different driver every couple of months.”
The team at Nickerson Disposal is small but mighty. Team members include Benjamin “Benji” Nickerson (second generation owner), Ben R. Nickerson (third generation part owner), Chris Nickerson (third generation part owner), Tyler Kent (almost 10 years of employment as a driver), Caitlin Gallagher (10 years of employment as office manager and granddaughter of Ben T.) and David Keeler (three years as a driver).
Nickerson Disposal is a local leader in the recycling, rubbish removal and trucking industry in the Chatham community. The business, which was established in 1969, is located in the Commerce Industrial Park and is truly the definition of a multi-generational family operation. Brothers Chris and Ben R. are currently at the helm of the operation, following in the footsteps of their dad Benji and grandfather Ben T.
“It’s been almost 60 years of service, and we are a true local company in every sense,” Ben R. said. “We are rooted here in Chatham. A lot of credit goes to my grandfather for sure. He started the business with trucks up at his house on Pond View, and when land had become available in Commerce Park, he bought a plot and we’ve been here ever since.”
He credits his grandfather Ben T. with building the brand to withstand the test of time. He praised his dedication to the community and recognized his grandfather’s countless volunteer efforts. There is a fund in Ben T.’s name through St. Martin’s Lodge called the Martin Nickerson Fund which supplies underprivileged kids in the area with school supplies, computers and so much more.
Nickerson Disposal is known best for recycling and trash removal. The company serves all kinds of local businesses, seasonal and year-round residential properties. They also offer rolloffs as a service for folks looking to clear out demolition material, yard debris or house cleanouts. They do not do contracts, which is a great perk for clients.
“We are really flexible so no one is stuck on anything,” Ben R. said. “Because we are small we are able to check locations frequently, like the Squire. We only dump their dumpster when it’s full. Some places will dump the container every time they check it, no matter how full it is. We don’t do that. That level of service in the trash world is pretty unheard of.”
It’s the simple things customers always appreciate with Nickerson Disposal, the small details you don’t always think about when deciding which company to hire.
“A big part of our service is that we don’t require customers to have cans curbside,” Ben R. said. “We’ll go anywhere on property within reason, dump the trash and bring the barrel back to where it’s kept. Other companies charge extra fees for doing that, but that’s all a part of our service.”
Ben R. is looking forward to a busy spring and summer season on the Lower Cape, so be sure to give them a call to get on their route.
“During the summer, it’s all hands on deck,” he said. “We work about 10 to 12 hours per day. We are out there grinding!”
