HYANNIS – Emma Ayer may be a freshman, but she shined among a cohort of the region’s best basketball players last weekend.
Ayer scored 5 points and received one of the her team’s most valuable player awards as she and the rest of the Lower Cape squad used a comeback in the fourth quarter to best the Upper Cape team 63-56 in the 40th Cape Cod High School All-Star Basketball games at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on Sunday.
“It was a little scary, because I'm a freshman, and it was a bunch of older people in the game with me,” Ayer said after the game. “But also it was fun, because I got to connect with people from other teams that I normally don't get to talk to and don't get to get to know. So it was fun making a team of people that have the same experiences as me as a basketball player.”
Ayer said it was “an honor” to be named to the Lower Cape All-Star team.
“Especially because I play with such good players, and being named All Star and getting to play with other All Stars is really cool,” she said.
Receiving one of the game’s most valuable player honors — which Ayer said was “shocking” — was an extra bonus to playing and pulling out the win in the game.
“ I don't even know what to say,” Ayer said. “I'm really happy about it. I played really hard.”
