Alfred Lionel Hurst, MD

Alfred Lionel Hurst, MD passed away quietly in his Harwich Port, Massachusetts home at the age of 97. Al was the son of Alfred L. Hurst and May (Marshall) Hurst. Al was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Dr Hurst attended The Moses Brown School, Brown University (’49) and Tufts Medical School (’53). He served his residency at The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Al proudly served our country as a Captain in The US Air Force. In 1953 he married Jean Stokes Thornton, also from Providence.
Dr Hurst, an otolaryngologist, spent his career in his private medical practice based in Milton, Massachusetts while serving on the staffs of the Milton Hospital, the Carney Hospital and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Al loved the ocean sailing his Wianno Senior, tennis, travel and his family. During his retirement he spent many years on the Harwich Board of Health, traveling the world with Jean and finding yet another beach to stroll in the Caribbean. He was a past member of the Wianno Club, Harwich Port Tennis Association, Stone Horse Yacht Club (where he served on the Board of Governors) and the Milton Hoosic Club.
Al was pre-deceased by his brother Robert of Fairfax, Virginia. He is survived by wife Jean Hurst, his two sons, Jeffrey of Harwich Port and Douglas of Greenwich, Connecticut, six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Al and Jean have been fortunate to have a devoted team of caregivers and are grateful for their help and support during his final months. A private service will be held with internment at The Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Harwich Port.
