Ice Sailing Returns To Long Pond

HARWICH – The opening day of the Winter Olympics was Friday, and competitors were taking to the ice not only in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, but on Long Pond as well in the form of ice sailing.
Long Pond has long been a favorite location for ice sailing when the cold weather cooperates. The more than 700-acre freshwater body is the largest on the Cape, providing a long course of sailing with space to maneuver.
With the lack of long stretches of cold winter weather in recent years, it’s been about a decade since ice boats have appeared on the pond, but recent weather conditions provided ample ice for a group of off-Cape ice sailors to enjoy the day.
