George Vincent Lascher, Jr.
January 21, 2026
July 19, 1943 — January 8, 2026
With deep sorrow, we share that George Lascher, a man of profound kindness, humor, and integrity, passed away peacefully on January 8th, surrounded by his cherished family. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife and devoted partner, Janet Brown Lascher. Together, they explored the world and built a life among dear friends in East Orleans, Massachusetts.
Throughout his 82 years, George touched countless lives with his wisdom, humor, and insight. His wife Janet, his daughters Abigail Lascher and Alissa Benway, his son-in-law Matt Benway, his grandchildren Lena, Maya, Graham, and Gisela, and his extended family and friends will forever hold him in their hearts. Known for his wit and warmth, George brought laughter and light wherever he went, always ready with a joke or keen observation that lifted spirits and deepened connections.
His close-knit community in East Orleans was a treasured part of his life. Friends will fondly remember George under the tree, engaged in animated discussions about democracy, the public good, and which local restaurant deserved their “honored presence.” As active members of the Orleans Yacht Club, George and Janet spent many joyful evenings sharing the view and camaraderie of the waterfront. George loved boating, golfing, and cheering on every Boston-area sports team, and never missed an opportunity to take his family by boat to the Orleans Spit.
Born in Jamaica, Queens, NY, to George Lascher and Beatrice Moran Lascher, George attended Oceanside High School before serving in the U.S. Army as a Company Clerk, where he earned Expert Marksmanship in both rifle and pistol, and received the Good Conduct Medal. He later earned a degree in English from the University of New Mexico.
George dedicated his career to education and publishing, working in sales with Sadlier and Zaner-Bloser Publishing Companies, forging meaningful relationships with schools throughout New England. He co-authored and designed one of the first SAT preparation software applications for the Macintosh, and with Janet and a colleague, co-authored The Great American English Handbook, a guide for high school students on practical life skills such as reading a stock market page and balancing a checkbook. Throughout his prolific and successful career, George’s quest to spread knowledge and access to learning was consistently evident.
Through St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Acton, George and his family became part of the “Cluster Group,” a close-knit circle of families united by shared values and a commitment to social justice. One of their most meaningful experiences was sponsoring Dr. An and Gam Thai and their family from Vietnam, beginning a lasting friendship.
George is survived by his wife, Janet; his daughters Abigail Lascher of Belmont, and Alissa Benway and her husband Matt Benway of Harvard; his grandchildren Lena, Maya, Graham, and Gisela; his brother Bob Lascher of Jupiter, FL; his cousin Charlotte and her husband Victor Vescova of Mission, TX; and cousins Sandra Zires, Christine Torraca, and Gregory Lascher, and their families.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in George’s name to the Cape Cod Foundation STEM Scholarship (science, technology, engineering, or math), a fund supporting Cape Cod students pursuing degrees in STEM who demonstrate perseverance and a strong work ethic. Donations may be sent to: The Cape Cod Foundation, 261 Whites Path, Unit 2, South Yarmouth, MA 02664. Please make checks payable to The Cape Cod Foundation with Cape Cod Foundation STEM Scholarship – in memory of George Lascher in the memo line.
A Celebration of Life will be held in East Orleans in June.
