ORLEANS – The cross country team at Nauset Regional Middle School put the finishing touches on a highly successful season by sweeping a regional meet on Nov. 4.
The boys team finished 9-0 overall, and the girls team finished 7-2. One boys runner — eighth grader Bowdy Beaulieu — placed first in every single event this year, including Nov. 4’s all-Cape meet, at which seven teams ran the 1.5-mile course at the middle school. Both the Nauset boys and girls won the all-Cape meet — which also included Dennis-Yarmouth, Monomoy, Lighthouse Charter, Barnstable, St. John Paul II and Nantucket.
“They did very well,” head coach Kristin Chatelain said.
The boys finished with 37 points as a team at the all-Cape meet, 42 ahead of runner-up Nantucket. The girls finished with 48 points, 20 ahead of runner-up Lighthouse Charter. All seven Nauset boys finished in the top 16 and four finished in the top 10. Six Nauset girls finished in the top 13 and three finished top 10. All seven boys and six girls set personal records at the race, according to Chatelain.
Beaulieu wrapped up his perfect season by finishing first with a time of 9:27 (beating his previous personal best by 11 seconds).
“So impressive,” Chatelain said.
Other runners in the boys race for Nauset included Jack Ayers in sixth place (9:51), Oliver Camp in ninth (10:16), Henry Yerkes in 10th (10:17), and Dane Olsen in 11th (10:18).
For the girls, Maisie Callahan placed sixth (11:09), Sophia Chatelain placed eighth (11:15), Zoe Haidas placed 10th (11:17), Cora Beaulieu placed 11th (11:22), and Evelyn Muto placed 12th (11:27).
The goal at the middle school level, according to Chatelain, is to introduce different types of running workouts to the kids so that they have a good idea of what cross country running is and a strong base to build on.
“You're just catching kids when running is still very natural to them, so as far as coaching goes, it's just giving them that little nudge to keep it fun,” Chatelain said. “Just build confidence, build community.”
The middle school team practiced at points with the Nauset Regional High School team, and the high school runners helped out at the all-Cape meet.
“I think it's really great for kids to know that there's a team waiting for them,” Chatelain said.
