Richard E. Gomes

Richard E. Gomes, a lifelong resident of Harwich, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 90 years old. Born on December 25, 1934, he was the beloved son of the late James and Anna Gomes.
A proud graduate of Harwich High School, Class of 1953, Richard served his country in the United States Army as a High-Speed Radio Operator, where he became highly proficient in Morse Code.
For 50 years Dick was the owner and operator of Captain Chase Interiors. He was also a soloist at Holy Trinity Church for many years. Being musical he put out an album named Song of Praise which he was very proud of.
Richard shared 67 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Shirley (Galvin) Gomes. Together, they built a family rooted in love, strength, and community. He was the proud father of Sharlene Gomes and the late Richard E. Gomes, Jr. and Kim Marie. His memory lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Lindsay Vittori (Mark Schedler), Madison Weatherwax-Borey (Mike Borey), Taylor Weatherwax, and Jake Weatherwax (Madysen Weatherwax), and his four great-grandchildren Amelia, Liam, Logan and Aria.
He is also survived by three of his eight siblings, and by a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends, all of whom were touched by his generosity, warmth, and humor.
Richard was deeply committed to his community. He served on the Harwich Planning Board and the School Committee, and was one of the seven original founders of the Harwich Community Development Corporation. He was also integral to the development of Gomes Way in partnership with Habitat for Humanity-an enduring reflection of his commitment to creating opportunities for others. In addition, he was a devoted member of the Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless, The Family Pantry of Cape Cod, and the Harwich Jaycees. His contributions made a meaningful difference in the lives of many, and his legacy of service will not be forgotten.
Visiting hours were held Tues. 10/14 at Chapman Funerals & Cremations 678 Main St. Harwich Center, A funeral Mass was celebrated Wed. 10/15 in Holy Trinity Church, Rte 28 West Harwich..
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Richard’s memory to The Family Pantry of Cape Cod (Harwich Food Pantry) an organization close to his heart.
Richard will be remembered as a man of integrity, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed.
