Ten years ago, Monomoy history/social studies teacher John Anderson launched a girls golf program. Only two girls went out for the team that year, though that first season ultimately marked the start of what blossomed into one the Cape’s strongest girls golf programs.
Anderson was recently recognized for his hard work, as the MIAA named him its 2022-2023 girls golf Coach of the Year.
“It was a surprise,” said Anderson. “I started the team about a decade ago and it’s so cool to see how far it's gone and all of the people that have been a part of that that’s helped make it an amazing program.
“When I received the award, I immediately just thought of all of the people that have helped – Jack Farrell, Karen Guillemette, Deb Keim.”
Anderson is no stranger to coaching high-end talent, though last spring’s team provided a different challenge for Anderson, who has taught at Monomoy for 22 years and also coaches the school’s boys golf program.
“This was the first team that didn't have super high-end talent,” he said. “All of the girls, I think, came in with very little experience. We made the sectional, so that was cool to see the result of the hard work that we put in.”
Anderson will receive his award at the MIAA Awards and Banquet in December.
