Talking Trash: Brewster Takes Part In National Cleanup Day

by Mackenzie Blue

BREWSTER – The Cape Cod Anti-Litter Coalition partnered with the department of natural resources last week to celebrate national cleanup day with four days of trash pickup around town.
Starting last Wednesday, Sept. 17 the two organizations offered a flexible window for residents to stop by, pick up materials and head out to areas to collect trash. The window, from Wednesday to Saturday (National Cleanup Day), offered the opportunity to fit any schedule.
The DNR provided safety vests, trash bags and pickers at its building. It also announced priority areas like Slough Road and Airline Road for people who had not yet chosen a location.
Collected trash was returned to the DNR office in designated containers where it will be sorted and recorded.
“When I was out with Will (a volunteer with the DNR) on Route 124, I found a two-piece bathing suit as well as a coverup,” said Meg Morris, co-founder of the CCALC. “I suspect they might have been placed on top of a car, then flew off by accident. On our route, we didn't find that many nips, maybe around 20. Mostly it was food wrappings, packaging including cardboard boxes, and beer/soda cans.”
The department of natural resources is still in the process of sorting through the collected trash and will provide statistics of the individual items that were picked up next week.
