Athlete Of The Week: Chris Morin

SOUTH DENNIS – Sophomore Chris Morin has excelled as the number one player of a Cape Cod Tech boys golf team that had yet to lose a match more than halfway through the season and will be headed to the Division 3 South Sectional.
A 1-under 35 — the low score on the day — by Morin in rainy conditions against Dennis-Yarmouth last Wednesday, Sept. 17 powered the Crusaders to their fifth consecutive win.
In the inclement weather at Dennis Pines, Morin had to make sure to swing softer. Otherwise, the golf club would have flown out of his hand.
“I had to do that for a few holes,” he said. “Made two birdies in the pouring rain. That was pretty good. Ended up working out pretty well. It was tough though and super wet.”
Cape Tech, led by Morin, went to 6-0 after a win against Diman last Thursday, Sept. 18. Their remaining games (including one against Upper Cape on Wednesday after The Chronicle’s deadline) are all against schools they’ve already beaten. Going undefeated is a real possibility for the team.
Head coach Kevin Furey said Morin has a deep passion for the game of golf. He studies the sport and works at his swing. He trains during the winter and practices with a simulator. Playing in college is on the radar.
Having as strong a golfer as Morin at the top of the Cape Tech lineup puts the other players — his teammates — at ease, according to Furey, who said he’s lucky as a coach to have him as a number one player.
“That’s a luxury for us to have, and he’s done such a great job managing that weight,” Furey said.

A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
