Athlete of the Week: Maddy Swett

HARWICH – As the Monomoy field hockey team embarks on a bid to reach the state semifinals for the fifth year in a row and the finals for the third year in a row, a lot — to be sure — rides on the player standing between the pipes.
Maddy Swett, just a sophomore, will start in goal for the third year for the thriving Sharks program. Her teammates have seen her effort. Since Swett joined the team as an eighth grader in 2023, Monomoy has lost three regular season games. Both years Swett has played in goal, the Sharks have reached the Division 4 state tournament finals.
“That’s our most important player,” junior Emery Cappallo said. “That’s our backbone for the whole team.”
And among a group that views conditioning as a key factor in what might propel Monomoy towards a state title they’ve been seeking for years, Swett stands out despite playing the position that runs the least on the field.
“She's a goalie, but she's still one of the best runners on the team,” senior Tessa Grodzicki said.

Playing a difficult, technical position, Swett has put in a great deal of time to develop outside the season, head coach Kyle Cappallo said.
“As she has developed, it's just improved her confidence, the team's confidence,” he said. “We feel like we have a competent goalie out there that's going to give us an opportunity to make big stops throughout the season.”
