Athlete Of The Week: Sean Needham

HARWICH – As a captain of the Monomoy track team, Sean Needham is proud of a group that has grown exponentially in the last two years.
“We have a lot more kids,” he said. “I think we’ve doubled our numbers easily. Everyone seems pretty excited. Everyone has been sticking with it.”
Needham, a junior from Harwich, runs the 200-meter, 110-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay events for the Sharks. He also competes in shot put. The team this year set a school record time for the boys 4x100 race.
“My season has been pretty good,” Needham said. “I’ve been crushing my times. This is my second year, and I’m already loving this sport.”
Monomoy spent Monday afternoon preparing for the championship meet for the Cape and Islands League the following day.
“We’re really excited for this,” Needham said. “A lot of opportunities are available. We’re going to be the underdogs. I’m really proud of us. I think we’re ready for this.”
As a captain, Needham helps to make sure drills are done correctly and with the right form, he said. Needham also said he was excited to see how the track team would grow, even following his senior year next season, and that he would keep checking in and stopping by to help out and coach with head coach Adam Syty.
Freshman Jakob Conlon said Needham is “like a mentor” to him.
“I think Sean is a great person,” Conlon said. “He’s captain of the football team, track team. That’s where I want to be one day, be a leader of the teams, so I kind of look up to him.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
