The Rev. Dr. Peter Rolf Kalk Brenner

April 24, 2024

The Rev. Dr. Peter Rolf Kalk Brenner, aged 80, peacefully died on April 16th, 2024, at Liberty Commons in Chatham, MA. He was surrounded by family and friends as he transitioned into eternal life with God, while listening to his favorite song, “Moon River” and holding hands with his devoted wife of 54 years, Bonnie. He is also survived by his loving sons, Erik (married to Veronica) and Tim (married to Ami), and his four adoring grandchildren; Sebastian, Samuel, Benjamin, and Sienna.

Peter’s fascinating life journey started with him being born in Germany during World War II and taken from his Norwegian mother. He was fortunate to be adopted by an Air Force chaplain, Colonel Arthur E.K. Brenner, and his wife, Trudy, who brought him to America at the age of five. Growing up in the military, he lived and traveled to many states and countries around the world.

His academic pursuits began by attending a military boarding school in Verdun, France. His higher education included a Bachelor of Science in Speech from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, majoring in radio and television broadcasting. Peter earned a Master of Divinity from Hartford Seminary Foundation as well as a Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary.

Peter was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ for 50 years, touching lives across congregations in Connecticut, Wisconsin, Utah, and Michigan. The joy of his ministry could be felt when officiating weddings and offering the gift of being present to those in need. Peter also faithfully served as a Navy Reserve Chaplain for 21 years, achieving the esteemed rank of Commander.

Peter was a man of many interests. He passionately supported the up-and-downs of the Boston Red Sox, enjoyed his time in coffee shops, and savored maple walnut ice cream. As an active father, he coached his sons’ sports teams as well as attended their performances, and helped them advance to the rank of Eagle Scout. He also enjoyed bowling and swimming. In addition to being a supportive father, he was an avid fan of his wife’s musical endeavors.

In retirement, Peter authored two books, his memoir “Behind the Smile: Orphaned by Hitler’s Madness” and “Prayers for the Essence of Our Spiritual Life.” He continued his active engagement with the community as a member of the First Congregational Church in Chatham, the Chatham Men’s Club, the Chatham-Harwich Newcomers Club, and a docent at the Marconi Maritime Museum.

Peter’s life was a testament to the transformative power of love, faith, and service. Though he may have departed from our sight, his spirit will forever reside in the hearts of those who knew him. Known for his kindness and unwavering devotion to his loved ones, he leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will endure through the generations.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Harbor Point in Centerville, MA and Liberty Commons who provided comfort and support during Peter’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Special thanks are also extended to the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center, particularly Molly Purdue, Mel Braverman, and Vaughn Harding. Their dedication exemplifies the motto, “Until there’s a cure, there’s community.”

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center in honor of Peter R.K. Brenner.

A celebration of life will be held at the First Congregational Church in Chatham on Saturday, May 4th at 2:00 PM.
