May In Harwich Is A Wonderland

HARWICH – The chamber of commerce will be demonstrating throughout the month of May that “Harwich is a Wonderland.”

The central event is “Wonder Land,” an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” to be performed at the Pilgrim Congregational Church Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12.

The play, “Wonder Land,” is directed and produced by Tristan DiVicenzo. The performances are on Friday at 7 p.m., a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m and an evening performance at 7 p.m. and a matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20.

“Harwich Is A Wonderland” is a new marketing initiative to jump start the season as well as collaborate and partner members together with the arts and businesses of Harwich, said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cyndi Williams.

The month-long celebration begins on Saturday, May 4 with a Tea Party and Croquet at The Arrival Bed and Breakfast on Route 28 in West Harwich. Williams said there will be two seatings for an intimate tea party and croquet gathering. The event will include a special menu from children and adults from Red River BBQ and cupcakes by Brenda’s Cakes for All Occasions. The first seating is 10 a.m. and the second at noon. Each seating is limited to 30 people and reservations are required. The cost is $15 for children under 12 and $20 for adults.

On Sunday, May 5 there will be a Cinco de Mayo Celebration at the Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. A buffet brunch featuring both traditional Mexican favorites and innovative dishes with modern flair will be featured. You can raise a toast to the morning with a revitalizing margarita crafted with Codigo tequila and move your hips and sway to Latin rhythms performed by the Mark Greel Trio. The celebration will take place at the Outer Bar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The price is $75.

Paint The Roses Red at The Tern Inn on Sunday, May 5 at a paint and sip event. It’s about keeping the Queen of Hearts happy, said Williams. The event will include all art supplies, instructions from the inn-house artist and a complimentary “Queen of Hearts'' specialty cocktail. There will be raffles with gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses. The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and registration is limited to 25 people. The cost is $39 per person. There are book signings with the Wonder Land cast on May 7 at Chase Library, May 8 at Brooks Free Library, and May 9 at Harwich Port Library. All events are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cast will be signing either the Disney book or the Lewis Carroll “Alice in Wonderland,” according to Williams.

On Saturday, May 11 the Garden Club of Harwich will be doing floral arrangements for “Mom, The Queen of Hearts” at the community center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. The fee is $5.

On Mother’s Day, May 12, the Wequassett Resort will be hosting a brunch with a flower market and live music from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Sunday, May 19 there will be a celebration of “Queens of the Road” with a post-Mother’s Day Car Show put on by Pit Stop Mobile Auto Detailing at the community center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All rides are welcome with a vehicle entry fee of $10 to benefit the chamber’s charitable foundation, said Williams.

On Sunday, May 25 the Harwich Garden Club will host a plant sale in Doane Park from 9 a.m. to noon.
