Chatham Elementary School Ms. Julin’s second grade class grew, harvested, dried, and popped popping corn this week. This corn was grown in the elementary school garden courtyard with the help of Wendy Koblish, the garden club advisor. Students had to rub the kernels off the ears of corn and wait for them to properly dry out. Students then measured the kernels into a cup, popped it in a hot air popper, which then produced our edible popcorn. We discovered that one cup of kernels makes a lot of popcorn! Chatham Middle School Chatham Middle School sixth graders traveled to the Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary to learn about green building, wind power, and pond bioindicators. Students learned about a variety of green building techniques and products, how to make an anemometer to measure wind power, and how to use pond creatures to determine the health of a pond. We are very thankful to Amy, Sarah, and Emily of the Audubon for sharing their expertise with us! Chatham High School Chatham High School special education teacher Judy Fratus recently was presented the Fred Hemmila Award by The Arc of Cape Cod. The award is given to recognize a special needs educator who has shown exceptional commitment to his or her students. The Arc of Cape Cod is dedicated to securing opportunities for Cape Cod residents with developmental disabilities to achieve their fullest potential as active members of their communities through advocacy, education, individual supports and recreational services. Nine Chatham High School seniors were recently awarded John and Abigail Adams Scholarships as a result of their excellent scores on the 2008 MCAS tests in mathematics and English/language arts. The scholarship, which is renewable for four years, provides a tuition waiver at all of the universities and colleges in the Massachusetts college system. Representing 25 percent of their class, seniors Leo Cain, Damien Chandler, Shannon Davenport, Hannah Farris, William Farris, Alicia Handel, Whitney Hanna, Brittany Langlois, and Daniel Santos are this year’s recipients.
