Jane McCarter Nickerson West

 

            Jane McCarter Nickerson West, 94, died peacefully on Monday, January 22 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her husband John Hughes Nickerson in 1978 and by her second husband James C. West in 2006. 

 

            Jane was born in 1924 in Memphis, Tennessee to Robert and Grace McCarter. She spent her early life across the river from Memphis in Marion, Arkansas where her father was a cotton farmer.

 

            She graduated from Marion High School, Christian College for Women and the University of Missouri School of Journalism where she majored in advertising. She and her husband, John Nickerson started The Children’s Shop in 1955 and she continued her passion of running her Store until 1984.

 

            Jane was a member of the Southside Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Florida and the First United Methodist Church in Chatham. She was a member of the San Jose Country Club and San Jose Yacht Club in Jacksonville and the Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham as well as the Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

 

            Jane loved to dance, play golf, host parties and was a great lover of wildlife.                                

 

            She is survived by her brother Tom McCarter’s, wife Gloria and his family. Her son John McCarter Nickerson, Rachel Jane Luna (Armando), Virginia Thomas Nickerson, Suzanna Nickerson (Tom Sharkey),  Jeanne Clark (George), her Grandchildren, Alan Barber, Jennifer Thompson, Missy Barber, Moriah Luna, Samantha Elizabeth Nickerson, Samantha Elena Nickerson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

            Calling hours will be at Nickerson Funeral Home, Crowell Road, Chatham on Friday January 26, 2018 from 4 to 6. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 27, 2018 at 11:00 at the First United Methodist Church, Main Street Chatham, MA. Burial will be private.
