CHATHAM – The iconic Countdown Cod will return to help ring in the new year.
Chatham First Night had taken the flying fish off its schedule for the upcoming New Year's Eve celebration after its creator, Richard Clifford, moved out of town. In its place the committee schedule a sing-along leading up to the countdown to midnight and fireworks over Oyster Pond.
Clifford has since moved back to town and agreed to provide the cod for the countdown once again. Baxter Crane will be able to provide a crane to slowly lower the cod as midnight is counted down, according to First Night officials. All the pieces came together, commented First Night Committee Chairman Ron Clark.
Hamilton will still lead the sing-along at Oyster Pond Park leading up to the countdown. The group is still looking for a midnight countdown coordinator to oversee the midnight festivities at the park.
The Countdown Cod, a largely-than-life, internally-lit, wire-and-aluminum replica of the Cape's namesake, made its debut at First Night exactly 10 years ago.
